Having carried 1,395 customers around the city, the Newcastle On Demand trial will end on Friday 30 October 2020. 

Thank you for participating in the Newcastle On Demand trial. The trial has allowed us to explore new ways to deliver public transport services that can be tailored to meet individual community needs.

This trial has been a great opportunity to better understand dynamic on demand transport during peak times in the CBD.

The Newcastle On Demand trial services Newcastle’s inner city suburbs picking you up from a designated point within the service zone and taking you to a designated point close to your destination in the CBD, Beaumont Street or Broadmeadow Station.

How to book

Give it a go by following these simple steps:

  1. Download the Newcastle Transport On Demand App from the App Store or from Android and register.
  2. Select your preferred payment option: OpalPay or credit or debit card.
  3. Move the pin or type in the address of your pick up locations and where you want to be dropped off.
  4. Track your bus and head to the pick up location.

Newcastle On Demand area

You can travel between the inner-city suburbs in the pink area to the CBD, Beaumont Street or Broadmeadow Station in the blue area, in both directions.

Newcastle On Demand service operates Monday to Friday between 6.30am and 9.00am in the morning and between 3.30pm and 6.00pm in the afternoon.

The flat fare is $3.20 per trip. 

You can use OpalPay or register your credit or debit card.

OpalPay does not include Opal benefits, such as the Transfer Discount.

It is now easier than ever to book through the Newcastle Transport On Demand app. By downloading the app you can track the bus to your designated pick up point. Follow these steps to book:

  1. Download the Newcastle Transport On Demand App from the App Store or from Android and register (or call 1300 590 506).
  2. Select your preferred payment option: OpalPay, credit or debit card.
  3. Move the pin or type in the address of your pick up locaitons and where you want to be dropped off.
  4. Track your bus and head to the pick up location..

Yes. The Newcastle On Demand bus trial will operate in addition to existing bus, train and light rail services that currently service the area.

Existing public transport services and active travel are a great options to combine with your On Demand journey or when travelling within an existing zone.

You can use OpalPay or register your credit or debit card.

About the trial

City of Newcastle, in partnership with Keolis Downer, are running the Newcastle On Demand trial.

Newcastle On Demand trial is part of a suite of mobility, energy and data innovations being funded through a $5 million grant won by the City in Federal Government’s Smart Cities and Suburbs Program.

Keolis Downer works with partners tech company VIA and car-share company GoGet to deliver the trial.
